“When there is love, you can live even without happiness.”
FYODOR DOSTOYEVSKY, Notes From Underground

Even though I am not a Valentine’s Day fan, as I believe that love and all the beautiful relationships must be celebrated and valued every single day, it did inspire me this year to do a special photo shoot. This photo shoot was indeed special, but not because of the huge red dress, but because of its difficulty. I believe it was the most difficult photo session I have ever had, because the weather was certainly not on our side. The cold, the strong wind, and the heavy light from the sun, made it an adventure and after only 30 min of shooting, I just had to finish it (one thing I NEVER do) because it was unbearable. But, hey, what one doesn’t do for love or for passion?! I was surprised that my partner in crime actually managed to get some good shots, given that my face was constantly squinting of cold and the bright light. So, kudos to my photographer for these shots!

But, going back to what inspired me in these pictures…it was love! If you haven’t read my recent introspection regarding the most beautiful word, you can check it out and let me know what you think about Deconstructing Love.

In this post, I created a collection with my favourite quotes about love mostly from the books I have read. It’s a collection of 17 quotes. I hope you enjoy it!

With love,

Sabina

Valentine's Day

“But love is always new. Regardless of whether we love once, twice, or a dozen times in our life, we always face a brand-new situation. Love can consign us to hell or to paradise, but it always takes us somewhere. We simply have to accept it, because it is what nourishes our existence. If we reject it, we die of hunger, because we lack the courage to stretch out a hand and pluck the fruit from the branches of the tree of life. We have to take love where we find it, even if that means hours, days, weeks of disappointment and sadness. The moment we begin to seek love, love begins to seek us. And to save us.”

PAULO COELHO, By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept

“The power of a glance has been so much abused in love stories, that it has come to be disbelieved in. Few people dare now to say that two beings have fallen in love because they have looked at each other. Yet it is in this way that love begins, and in this way only.”

VICTOR HUGO, Les Misérables

“The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them.”

THOMAS MERTON, No Man Is An Island

“It’s probably not just by chance that I’m alone. It would be very hard for a man to live with me, unless he’s terribly strong. And if he’s stronger than I, I’m the one who can’t live with him. … I’m neither smart nor stupid, but I don’t think I’m a run-of-the-mill person. I’ve been in business without being a businesswoman, I’ve loved without being a woman made only for love. The two men I’ve loved, I think, will remember me, on earth or in heaven, because men always remember a woman who caused them concern and uneasiness. I’ve done my best, in regard to people and to life, without precepts, but with a taste for justice.”

“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”

FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

“It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.”

VINCENT VAN GOGH

“The woman in love tries to see with his eyes… she is interested only in the landscapes she sees with him, in the ideas that come from him; she adopts his friendships, his enmities, his opinions; when she questions herself it is his reply she tries to hear… The supreme happiness of the woman in love is to be recognized by the loved man as a part of himself; when he says “we” she is associated and identified with him, she shares his prestige and reigns with him over the rest of the world.”

SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR, The Second Sex

“When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.”

PAULO COELHO, The Alchemist

“The most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much, and forgetting that you are special too.”

ERNEST HEMINGWAY, Men Without Women

“Every heart sings a song, incomplete, until another heart whispers back. Those who wish to sing always find a song. At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet.”

“I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her flaming self respect. And it’s these things I’d believe in, even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn’t all she should be. I love her and it is the beginning of everything.”

F. SCOTT FITZGERALD

“It was love at first sight, at last sight, at ever and ever sight.”

“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.”

“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”
